MATTOSO
Born in Rio de Janeiro in the late sixties, at thirteen Augusto began his musical life studying classical guitar. At sixteen he had his first contact with the Double Bass while studying with the famous bassist Paulo Russo. He took his Bachelor’s degree in Double Bass at the University of Rio de Janeiro, graduating in 2006.
Augusto is considered a bassist of great versatility, a confident and creative master of all musical styles especially the Brazilian Bossa Nova, Samba Jazz, MPB and Gafieira. He has extensive experience with Jazz Big Bands and large and small Classical Ensembles.
His experience over the last 25 years as a professional bass player includes Rio Jazz Orchestra (1993 - 2000), Paulo Moura Jazz Orchestra (2002 - 2005), Chamber Orchestra of University of Rio de Janeiro (1998 - 2005), Osmar Milito Trio (1997 - 2024), Hélio Delmiro Trio (2004 - 2006), Carlos Malta Quartet (1997 - present), Cliff Korman Ensemble / Trio (2005 - present), Mauricio Einhorn Quartet (2008 - 2012). He has recorded and performed with several international artists in Brazil and abroad, including the vocalists Lisa Nilsson (Sweden 2003 - 2008), Angela HagenBach (USA 2003 - 2004) and Alma Thomas (USA 2014 - present), the pianists Ann Marie Henning (Sweden 2012-present), Benedikt Jahnel (Germany 2018), Dan Costa (Portugal 2018), guitarist Hans Mathisen (Norway 2019 - present), the renowned saxophonist Jean-Pierre Zanella (Canada 2003 - present), trombonists Chris Stover (USA 2015) and Luis Bonilla (USA 2016), the accordionist Vince Abbracciante (Italy 2014 - 2015).
Augusto has presented his own work since 2008 as a performer and composer and currently leads the Apocalypse Trio with Cliff Korman (USA) on piano and Rafael Barata (Brazil / USA) on drums. He also leads the Modern Double Bass Trio with Pille-Rite Rei (Estonia) on vocals and piano and Márcio Bahia (Brazil) on drums, featuring exclusively songs that were written by double bass players. In addition to his albums Augusto appears on hundreds of recordings with different artists of different styles, Brazilian and foreign.
